It’s not uncommon for cords & weights to have suffered from wear and tear over the years. It may be that your cords require replacing to maintain the condition of your windows.
At Listed Window Refurbishment, we consider replacing cords to be a standard aspect of our window refurbishment work. Most window sashes have been counterweighted which therefore allows them to be operated easily.
Window sashes are hung on cords and these are then passed over pulleys. The cords are connected to weights which are concealed within weight boxes and also within hollow sides of the case.
We provide you with the best range of cords & weights.
For heavier windows, chains can be used as an alternative to cords, therefore providing a robust and reliable option. If you have chains, they can be retained or they can be switched over to cords. You can also rely on Listed Window Refurbishment to install new sash cords that match your existing diameter. This will ensure that your new cords will not snag on the pulley, so you will benefit in the short and long term.
We utilise cotton cord, which has already been pre-stretched and then impregnated with wax. This helps to minimise the risk of rot and allows the cord to run smoothly. After we have attached the sash cords we manoeuver the cords into position and ensure they work effectively.
The standard of your cords & weights can improve your home, therefore, contact Listed Window Refurbishments to care for your home. We are delighted to say that we provide a focused and tailored service for clients in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling.
This involves removing a small amount of the timber of the window frame and replacing this with tubing, brushes or small metal fins.

Draught-proofing can be fitted unobtrusively to timber sash and case windows to bring them up to modern performance standards.
It is a cost effective way of improving comfort and noise insulation and reducing heat loss and dust ingress.
Draught proofing/ weather stripping and proofing/stripping/sealing – they all mean exactly the same thing: anything done to reduce air leakage.
More heat is lost in this way than can be saved by trying to double-glaze your existing windows (which in many cases will be impossible anyway).
The natural gaps in a sash and case window can add up to a 3″ x 3″ hole. Therefore it is important to reduce leakage as far as possible.
Doing so will increase your comfort and reduce your heating bills.
The cost of draught proofing will generally be recouped within 5 to 25 years.
- Your windows will not rattle any more
- Reduce noise pollution

- Save Money
Here at Listed Window Refurbishment we employ our own qualified painters.
As everyone is aware painting is 90% preparation and 10% perspiration!!!
We have the advantage of having access to the window components due to the fact that we have stripped the window out to carry out refurbishment.
Thus allowing us to place the sashes (sliding sections of windows) on to trestles and prepare the sashes properly i.e.
- rub down, sand and fill
- repair putty lines
- apply coat dustcoat
- apply undercoat
- apply gloss
Listed Window Refurbishment endeavour to always use the best materials available, in the case of paintwork we use a micropourous external paint – with up to 14 year life span.
Because the paint is micropourous and expands and extracts with the window and the pointing we are able to paint right out to the pointing line, this achieves nice, clean straight lines.
If our customer wishes to have internal painting carried out this can also be arranged to match (or as close as) existing paint colouring and finish.
In the case of new windows being manufactured, the windows will leave our premises fully painted and once fitted our painter will come and apply one final coat to ensure a first class finish.
Specifications of materials are available on request.
Listed Window Refurbishment can also add extra security to your sash windows.
There are many locks for sash windows available on the market. However, there are three types widely used.
Push Button – Key Release
These are fitted on the top of the lower sash and are easy to operate. Push the button for locking and release with one turn of a key. The lock is very substantial and would be a good deterrent for any would-be burglar.
Weeks Lock
This lock allows the window to open 3-4 inches either up or down which is ideal for secure ventilation. In the case of customers with children or pets it provides ventilation without the worry of accidents.
Sash Bolts
The least expensive form of window locks security. This operates by two bolts that are fitted through top rail of the bottom sash and the lower rail of the top sash. These bolts can be secured or opened by using an align key. Very effective but takes time to secure and open.
Having key operated locks on your windows may reduce your house insurance premiums with some companies.
Simplex fittings are not a new invention, they have been around for over a hundred years.
Listed Window Refurbishment endeavour to fit the best material available i.e brass, whenever possible (we can have the brass work chromed if required).
Simplex is a system that allows the lower sash to swing in easily to allow cleaning and future maintenance and should be fitted to all windows above ground floor.
Most people don’t realise that the windows do swing in for cleaning and future maintenance i.e broken glass, external painting, pointing etc
These fittings are required by Scottish law for new builds.
As all 1st floor and above windows have to be able to open inwards for safe cleaning to conform to building regulations.
We can retro fit these to any sash windows.
The top sash does not swing inward.
It is trapped between the window’s outside facing and parting bead.
It can however slide down the whole length of the opening.
Here at Listed Window Refurbishment we use burnt sand and linseed oil mastic as this is the original method for sealing the outside facing of the sash window to the stonework ingo.
Pointing of windows, like painting, is not really a repair we would class this as general maintenance and if properly applied it will last for years.
Patch up repairs to pointing is a waste of money and when re-pointing it is better to rake out old pointing completely, pack the cavity with a recognised material then coat with PVA. Finally, apply the traditional sand mastic.
It is hand applied using a pointing trowel.
The mastic is available in blonde and red colours to match the sandstone building.
This method of sealing is the preferred option for listed buildings and conservation areas in Scotland for its original look.
It can be painted after the surface oil in the mastic has dried out after a few days.
If the mastic is left unpainted it can dry out completely and start to fall out all together after a few years.
This is usually the case with most neglected sash windows.
